Another Beauty Makeover with Makeup Artist Rob Closs

The Southampton Art School recently hosted a special makeup artistry evening featuring television and film makeup artist Rob Closs. Rob demonstrated the modern technique of 'airbrushing', where makeup is misted on to the skin in subtle layers. Part of the evening's appeal was the chance for individuals to experience a beauty makeover themselves.

Professional Makeup Artist Rob Closs demonstrates airbrush techniquesThe Southampton Art School in Southampton, Ontario, recently broadened its community involvement by hosting an entire week revolving around wellness and other areas of interest that were suggested by members and others.

From yoga and creative writing, pain management and the arts to a special evening of modern day make-up techniques, the school tried to offer a wide range of classes that would appeal to broad spectrum of the community.

As with all events hosted by the Southampton Art Gallery and School, each class was designed not only as a fundraiser but also to broaden the School's appeal to a wider audience.

airbrush makeup demonstrated in a beauty makeoverThe last event of the week was a special make-up artistry evening that featured television and film makeup artist Rob Closs from Toronto.

"When I look at someone that I have to apply make-up to, his or her face is like a blank canvas to me. I try to bring out the best features while minimizing others, all through make-up application," Closs says. "It's much like painting. You have to choose colours, know how to blend, shadow and highlight."

For many thousands of years, humans in every culture around the world have used colour products to enhance their appearance. From B.C. China and India to Middle-ages Europe, cosmetics of one kind or another have played an integral part in almost every society.

The Art School demonstration featured the modern technique of 'airbrushing', where make-up is misted on to the skin in subtle layers. Part of the evening's appeal was the chance for individuals to experience a 'makeover'.

"Some of the makeovers I've done," said Closs, "are unbelievably satisfying, both for the client and myself. I've seen women and girls who have little self-confidence blossom under the metamorphosis. It's a well-known fact that if you feel good about yourself, you project that feeling to the world outside you and, sometimes, all it takes is a little enhancement.

Do I consider myself an artist? Absolutely. I use colour, light and shadow and my canvas is the human face."

Every class held during the first Creative Wellness Week was filled to capacity and the school is considering making the week an ongoing event with a series of speakers and classes that appeal to a broad audience.

  • Be a Beach Beauty with These Sun Worthy Makeup Tips

Getting ready for a day at the beach should be simple and that includes your makeup routine. While the heavy makeup that you may use for a night out on the town or for the long sunless winters works well, the beach is a whole different world. Beach makeup should be light, fun, protective, and waterproof. If you're hitting the waves soon, follow these tips for makeup perfection.

Eyes: Nothing looks worse than a beautiful face masked with running black mascara. Unfortunately, the beach is one of the prime places for this makeup disaster to transpire. Between the blistering temperatures, the ocean, and the pool, your bound to have moisture of some type ruin your makeup. This makes the number one beach makeup must have water proof mascara. If you don't have waterproof mascara you're better off just going without it and preventing the dreaded raccoon eyes.

Lips: Leave the bright color lip sticks at home and swap them out for some sheer lip gloss that encompasses your natural beauty. Regardless of what you choose to cover those lips make sure it's ready to protect you from the sun. Choose lip glosses, sticks, and balms that offer SPF 15 protection. The salt water and dry air often found on the beach can also take a toll on your lips by removing moisture from them so make sure you choose something with added moisturizers.

    Your Skin:
beach makeup should be light and ready for whatever the day may bring your way. Since you will be in and out of the water or perspiring due to the super hot temperatures, you may want to limit the amount of foundation and cover up you use and stick the bare essentials. Event hough you need little foundation, especially once the snow start to paint your face with that bronzed glow, you do need to pay a little attention to your delicate face. Make sure to moisturize your face daily. Look for moisturizers that offer that necessary sun protection. SPF 15 is generally the lowest you should go especially if you have fair skin that is prone to freckling and burning.

Even though your skin routine should be simple while sitting beach side, when you go out for the evening you'll want to glam up. Take advantage of the color the sun has left on your face and use translucent powdered in the areas you need them most like your t-zone . You can also use a bit of blush to really bring that beach goddess out. Be sun savvy and make sure your makeup matches your tone and only use it to bring out the glow not to cover it.

Hair: Few things on the beach are kind to your hair. T he salt water and chlorine can leave it begging for moisture and the breeze can leave you in desperate need of a brush. Keep this in mind when you pack your hair accessories and make sure you have plenty of conditioner, hair ties to pull back those beach worthy tresses, as well as a hat for those days you just can't win the battle with your messy mane.

    Sunscreen: The Very Best Advice

Exposure to the sun and its ultraviolet rays is the most harmful thing you can do to your skin. Many people have had skin cancer as a direct result of too much sun exposure. Imagine, you are trying to reduce the signs of aging or attempting to bronze the tone of your skin and you end up with a cancerous cyst on your face or body that has to be removed. Take great care of your skin—especially if you are going to be outdoors, even just for a little while.

They say that wearing sunglasses any time you are outside during the day is a very good idea. But you must choose carefully which kind of sunglasses you purchase, because if they do not have a certain percent of UV protection, they will not work as well as they should. You want the highest quality sunglasses you can get. However, as you know wearing a good pair of sunglasses does not take the place of wearing sunscreen. You will always want the sunscreen, and you may want both. Both methods of protection used together are the preferable, and most recommended course of action to take against the harmful effects of the sun.

Of course, the skin care manufacturers and professionals at the beauty counters in department stores or of the skin care products in the make-up isle of your local grocery store have caught on to this public spread of skin care awareness and have adapted their products accordingly.

Almost every make-up base has an SFP of some sort— some of them contain amounts of sunscreen as low as SPF 5, but usually the SPF level is somewhere in the vicinity of SPF 15. By this method, many make-up manufacturers believe that more women will buy their products instead of opting for a shiny face and smelling like the local pool.

The same is true for moisturizers. You can find daytime moisturizers in both expensive and inexpensive stores that also contain SPF levels, again usually SPF 15. It is recommended that you wear these moisturizers alone or underneath your make-up.

So that takes care of your face, whether you shop at inexpensive stores or at stores that are a bit more expensive—what you really need is that SPF. But now what about the rest of you? What about your arms and legs and belly showing in the sun? Remember to purchase plenty of sunscreen this season for you and your kids’ protection. And, believe it or not it is recommended that one wear sunscreen even in the wintertime or on a cloudy day. The sun is still there, and as a matter of fact, it has been said that the sun can be worse on your skin when the sky is slightly cloudy because the UV rays have a sort of prism-effect as they penetrate the clouds, magnifying the UV damage that can be caused to the skin.

Mainly my point is, protect yourself and your family. No matter how small or seemingly trivial the errand may be—even if you are just running in and out of the store, use sunscreen and keep yourself safe.

Professional Tips To Summer Proof Your Makeup

As summer temperatures heats up do you find your makeup literally melting down your face? By midday has your perfectly applied makeup fallen victim to the heat and humidity of summer and disappeared? Are you ready to surrender to Mother Nature and stop using any makeup in the summer? Well, now you can chill out, enjoy the summer and with these professional tips used by some of the world’s top makeup artists to look beautiful all summer long.

    • Don’t apply makeup for at least 5 minutes after applying moisturizer.

    • Use an oil free moisturizer or a moisturizing lotion instead of a cream.

    • Use oil free loose powder.

    • Apply a light dusting of loose face powder before applying foundation.

    • Use a light weight liquid or powder foundation instead of a cream foundation.

    • Use a tint moisturizer instead of foundation.

    • After foundation and concealer is applied blot any oil built up with a clean tissue press gently into moist areas. This will allow the color to last longer and avoid a cake look.

    • Use waterproof products.

    • Keep your lip pencils, eye pencils and lipsticks in the refrigerator.

    • Before applying eye shadow apply an eye shadow base.

    • For long lasting eye color apply powder eye shadow with a damp brush.

    • To keep eyeliner in place and color looking fresh, use an eyeliner pencil then go over the pencil with a thin line of eye shadow in the same color .

    • Limit mascara to one coat.

    • Avoid using mascara on lower lashes.

    • After applying your color mascara apply a clear sealant mascara over it.

    • For lip color that last; instead of using lipstick, apply lip balm to lips then fill in with lip pencil.

    • To set make up and keep make up looking fresh longer spray face with a professional setting spray or a fine mist of water after applying your make up.

3 Steps To Natural Summer Makeup

Summer demands fuss free makeup. A naturally pretty look that would not streak when you sweat. Something that is low maintainence and which looks great on the beach.

The trouble is, that carefree, nude makeup look is a lot harder to achieve than a painted face. How do you use makeup and look like you were born that way?

Start by taking care of your skin now. Your body is made up of what you eat and drink. Eat junk food and drink lots of sweet carbonated water and caffeine, and that's what your body has to work with. Your skin reflects the state of your health. If your body is full of junk, your skin is likely to be spotty, congested or at least, far from its best. You might get away with it while you are young, but sooner or later, your excesses would catch up with you.

Skip the cola. Drink lots of plain water, spring water or mineral water instead. Get a two liter bottle of mineral water, or fill a 2 liter bottle with drinking water and make it a point to finish that by the end of the day. If you can't tolerate plain water, squeeze a lemon and add that lemon juice to your water to flavor it. This would give your body a chance to clean out the junk.

Next, cut down on that junk food.Oily fries with an oily burger is going to load your body with more grease. If your skin is spotty, it might help if you cut down on the grease and sugar. By the way, bacteria loves sugar and you can thank bacteria for those infected spots on your face. Stop feeding the bacteria, keep your hands and hair off your face and let your skin recover. Great summer makeup is best achieved with good skin, so the sooner you start, the better for you.

Now for the actual makeup. If you take care of your skin, putting on that natural beach makeup would be very simple.

Step 1 - Perfect with concealer

Depending on the state of your skin, you may or may not need concealer. If your skin is great, just use a tinted moisturizer like Burt's Bees moisturizer to add color to your face. Pick a shade as close to your natural coloring as possible.

If you have zits, then use a brush and dab on a little concealer over it. If you have dark rings, hide them with a concealer as well. Use as little as possible to keep your look natural.

Step 2 - Paint with lipstick

Make your lips thoroughly kissable. Soft, rosy lips that glisten in the sun are perfect for summer... and all year round.

You'll need a touch of lipstick to add color to your bare face. Go for a pretty color like coral, rose, or a soft pink. The trick is to look in the mirror and see the color inside your lip. Pick your lipstick in a color similar to that for the most natural, prettiest look.

Take a lip brush and paint on the lipstick. Start by drawing the outline of your lips with the lip brush, then fill then in. Blot the lipstick with a tissue paper, then apply again. This would help the color stay on longer. Slick on a lip gloss for shine over the entire lips, or at least over the center of your bottom lip to make your lips look fuller.

Step 3 - Highlight with mascara

Bring the focus to your eyes. Your eyes are your best asset. Especially when framed by lush eyelashes. Since it is summer, go for a waterproof mascara. Make sure you get a good eye makeup remover to remove it each night before you sleep.

Get ready a clean mascara wand to separate your lashes. You can wash and dry the wand of an old mascara, or you could buy an eyelash comb.

Apply mascara over your upper lashes. Then touch a little mascara on your lower lashes with the tip of your mascara wand. Separate the lashes with a clean mascara brush or wand and let the mascara dry. Once the mascara is completely dry, you may apply a second coat if you want more dramatic lashes. Separate the lashes after this second coat as well.

Verve and Versatility in Makeup Artistry

Makeup Pro Rob Closs talks to Stage Directions Magazine about the importance of diversity for today's makeup artist.

special effects makeup designMakeup pro Rob Closs is well known for his diversity—he's as skilled at creating gorgeous airbrush effects as he is at hardcore bruised-and-bloody FX. Morphing makeup styles not only keeps life interesting—it’s the core message sent at Closs's training mecca, The School of Professional Makeup in Toronto. From the school's inception, Closs decided to blend educational disciplines.

“I started doing makeup in 1981, and eventually was drawn to teaching in the early '90s," Closs recalls. "Having taught facial design and technique at many different schools, I took the strengths of my different teaching experiences, the best of the best, and created our initial program in 1998." Closs approaches the role of a makeup artist from a number of fronts: designer, technician, interpreter of an artistic statement and businessperson. For example, his program stresses prosthetic work not simply from the perspective of straight-up latex craft, but from the need for an artist to communicate effectively with a crew, producer or director. Closs also likes infusing his curriculum with variety, plain and simple.

“I like to tweak the material I teach and grow the program continually,” he explains. Because the work is highly detailed, Closs looks for innately curious students.

“When a student asks, 'How does this institution differ from other makeup schools?' I know that student is prepared, and potentially, motivated,” he says. “In this industry, motivation is everything—it's all freelance work, and if you're lucky to land a job, it has to be because you're motivated to put yourself out there and know your work."

In the end, Closs wants his students to think on their feet—which he thinks is the key to any makeup artist's ultimate success:

"The industry's always changing, and you've always got to change to accommodate it."
