Lips care in Winter

Exfoliate the dead skin on your lips. You can mix a little gram flour, honey and sugar together until the sugar crystals have dissolved slightly. You can then gently scrub your lips with this paste in order to get rid of any dead skin. 

Make sure that you apply a little petroleum jelly to your lips once you have rinsed your lips as this will work as an effective winter moisturizer that will prevent your lips from drying.

Mix one teaspoon of milk with few drops of lemon juice. keep the mixture in the fridge for an hour then apply before going into the bed ,not only on lips but also around the lips. In just three days you will get long lasting result.

Mix glycerine with rose water. Apply the mixture on  lips before going to the bed.

Coconut oil is very effective in treating chapped lips. Simply apply small amount of oil on your lips several times daily. 

Aloe Vera is an amazing healing agent for our skin. Put a small amount of Aloe Vera gel on your lips daily to cure chapped or dry lips.

The Dangers of wearing too much sunblock!

We're always being told to protect our skin from the sun, but what about the other end of the scale when you over do it? Did you know that wearing too much sun cream can be damaging to your health and well being too? Read on to find out 
Get your face in the sun and top up the sun rays when the summer comes around later this year! I am very fair skinned and for most of the year I wear a sunhat, sunglasses, SPF 25 on my face, but at this time of year I throw caution to the wind and make sure I recharge my body from the sun.

Why? Well it’s been reported that people who constantly use sun cream can have Vitamin D deficiency. As reported on the BBC News on 19 January 2011 a 12-year-old girl with vitamin D deficiency has been told that her condition could have been caused by using strong sun cream. The young girl used factor 50 cream which, according to her consultant, could have deprived her of the essential vitamin and caused the bone disease rickets.

And those people with fair skin, who have been taught the mantra ‘slip, slap, slop’ to good effect to help stop the rise in skin cancers are also at risk of Vitamin D deficiencies.

Protection against sunburn should remain the priority, says Cancer Research UK, but it is important to make sure that you do ensure you do get some sunlight on to your skin in order to build up your levels of Vitamin D. Medical advice is now to recommend short spells in the sun, without sun cream and in the middle of the day too. One of the up and coming vitamins on the market is Vitamin D and is being used in spray format in particular to combat deficiencies and the potential also to have SAD. Vitamin D keeps bones strong and protects against diseases such as osteoporosis, a common complaint with older women

With all the warnings over skin cancer, which should still be taken very seriously it is interesting that both Cancer Research UK and the National Osteoporosis Society are promoting small doses of sunshine to top up Vitamin D levels. Whilst the government have recommended that pregnant women and children under 5 take Vitamin D supplements, I am pretty certain that most people are not aware of this. Skin Cleansers For Different Skin Types


Oily Skin:

The selection of cleansers for oily skin should involve using products that rinse off well, both bar soaps and liquid cleansers have been formulated for this purpose. Many of the soap gels and stronger liquid cleansers are helpful for oily skin. Because the skin on the face, chest and back is oilier than the rest of the body, it may be necessary to use one product on these areas, and a more moisturizing product on the arms, legs, hands and feet. Many of the cleansers which are appropriate for acne-prone skin, would be suitable for oily skin. 

Dry Skin:

The use of hard-milled face soaps and gentle synthetic detergents are very appropriate for dry skin. It may be necessary to only use cleansers on the face and body folds, when the ambient humidity is low for example, in the winter or in the south-western United States. There are many liquid cleansers formulated by cosmetic houses as well as products like Cetaphil or Aquanil which are very useful. There are some new products, which incorporate a liquid cleanser in a cleansing sheet, these act to leave on a modicum of petrolatum after the final rinse and have been demonstrated to be effective.

Normal Skin:

Most people can cleanse with bar soap daily. The synthetic detergent soaps react better with hard water. Liquid cleansers and soap gels are popular at this time, the advantages, being cleaner dispensers in the bathroom. The cleansing sheets may be used for normal skin as well, the petrolatum is suspended in the water by crystals that dissolve in the last rinse leaving the skin feeling smooth and moist. People with normal skin may enjoy using a loofah-type sponge to clean themselves, these have been sold with some liquid cleansers. 

Sensitive Skin:

People with sensitive skin can react easily to fragrance and preservatives, and should avoid mechanical cleansers such as cleansing grains, brushes and loofahs. Most synthetic detergents have the pH balanced favorably for the skin and are well tolerated by sensitive persons. A few liquid cleansers are not irritating, but many interact with the skin because of their additional surfactants. Two non-irritating cleansers are Cetaphil and Aquanil lotions, many of the hard-milled soaps are well tolerated also. 

Antibacterial Cleansers:

These products were introduced in the 1960' s and have been used by many people since. They initially contained photosensitizers, which have since been removed. Triclosan is currently the most common active ingredient. For persons in occupations, which demand extra precautions, these products have been helpful. However, for many dermatologists, these products are very drying to the skin and they often contribute to hand and body eczema. Various antibacterial cleansers are available that are of benefit to acne patients, such as Tersaseptic.

It may take a little while to get used to the added step, but your hands will thank you for it when they go from dry to moisturized around the clock. And don't forget to add a travel-size bottle in your handbag for on-the-go washings out in the public.

2. Wear Gloves

Cold weather is simply a recipe for dry, cracked hands. This is easy to avoid by simply wearing gloves. The elements are so harsh on your skin, but by wearing your gloves each time you head out, you'll limit the exposure your hands have to the cold weather, which will help prevent dry skin.
Look for gloves to go on sale and pick up an extra pair or two so that when the inevitable glove goes missing, you'll have an extra set.

3. Moisturize Your Lips

If you've ever had horribly dry, chapped lips, chances are good you've got a constant supply of lip balm in every location possible. If you haven't experienced super chapped lips, do yourself a favor and avoid it at all costs.

6. Vaseline Works Wonders

I know, Vaseline isn't really the high-end pampering product you might want to buy, but Vaseline can be a skin-saver for dry skin in the winter months. There are so many uses for Vaseline as well.
  • For extremely cracked hands and feet, apply and then put on cotton socks and gloves. Doing this will give immediate results.(If you can't sleep like this, find an hour or so during the day.)
  • Apply to cracked cuticles
  • Apply to small areas after exfoliating. (dry spots like elbows, knees and heels)
  • Put over windburned cheeks before heading back outdoors. It will seal and protect. (Especially good for children.)
  • This is amazing lip balm. You'll notice instant, yet long lasting hydration. (No SPF though.)

Regular Sunscreen Use Helps Prevent Melanoma

Using sunscreen regularly can help to prevent melanoma

Numerous studies have shown that regular sunscreen use can prevent squamous cell carcinoma, but whether it's useful for preventing other skin cancers, such as melanoma, has remained controversial. New research published in the January 20 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology provides convincing evidence that sunscreen is indeed effective for preventing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Researchers at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane, Australia, randomly assigned 1,621 participants to two groups: sunscreen use, or discretionary use (which included no use). The first group was given an unlimited supply of broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 16 and was instructed to apply the product to their head, neck, arms, and hands each morning. Participants were also advised to reapply after bathing, heavy sweating, or prolonged sun exposure. People in the discretionary group were asked to continue using (or not using) sunscreen of any SPF as they always had.
Fifteen years after the start of the study, the researchers found half as many melanomas in the sunscreen group as in the control group (11 vs. 22, respectively), and an even greater difference in the number of invasive melanomas (3 vs. 11).
The results show that you can greatly reduce your risk of developing melanoma by regularly using sunscreen. However, sunscreen use is just one part of a more comprehensive sun protection strategy, which includes wearing a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.

With an increasing emphasis on beauty and age defiance in North American society, everyone seems to be seeking ways to make themselves appear younger by taking better care of their skin. While it is true that skin is one of the keys to a healthy, youthful appearance, not all skin care treatments that are proposed, or even that are popular, are effective. Here are some of the top myths when it comes to skin care.

1) Acne. Acne is the bane of everyone from their teenage years and onward. There are so many false rumors out there concerning acne that an article could be written on them alone. To start with, acne does not cease miraculously when you are out of your teens. In some people, acne is a perpetual problem and will continue throughout their lives. Many of the false ideas about acne are extremely detrimental to people who are afflicted with the condition. Acne is not a sign that an individual does not wash their face. In fact, many individuals with acne will be told this by their peers and the result will be extremely counter-productive; they end up washing their faces too much. The dryer skin does not clear out the acne problem, instead it exacerbates it. Acne may be aggravated by certain foods in an individual’s diet, but rarely are the “suspect foods” (chocolate, French fries, or pizza) the main trigger. Finally, remember that acne can be treated by several types of medicine on the market today-and effectively- so it is all right to go to your doctor and consult her about acne treatments.

2) Tanning. Tanning is often advertised as adding a warm, healthy glow to your skin. The truth is, nothing is worse for your skin than direct exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays that are necessary to tan, whether you are on a bed or in the sun. Tanning may help to get rid of formed acne, but it will not prevent new pores from clogging. Tanning has little benefits beyond immediate aesthetic appeal, and in the long run it will prove harmful to your skin. It is best to use sun block whenever you are out in the sun.

3) Moisturizers. Many people think that moisturizers will help in making their skin appear more youthful by getting rid of wrinkles. This is not the case. Moisturizers will help to lubricate the skin and lessen dryness, but they will not serve to repair the microscopic damage at the cell level that wrinkles represent.

4) Skin Care ingredients. For many years, top beauticians have placed slices of cucumber over the eyes of their clients in order to reduce skin damage and swelling. Today, you will find many products on the shelves that depict a cucumber or slice of cucumber and claim to include cucumber extracts that will help rejuvenate your skin. The fact is that it is not any particular mineral in the cucumber that is beneficial to the skin, it is the fact that cucumbers are mostly made of water, which leeches into the skin during the process and gives the appearance of re-invigoration.

All of these myths are used today to help sell products via a method known as scare tactics. In fact, if you follow the advice of your doctor most of your skin care needs will be resolved, and they will not require a lot of home grown methods and wives tale rumors.

Structure of skin:

It is essential to know about structure of skin before analyzing the causes which make changes on skin. Skin is made up of multiple layers of epithelial tissues. Microscopic section of the skin shows two distinct parts. Epidermis is the top most layer. The upper layer of epidermis contains dead cells which gradually cast off. These cells are gradually replaced by fresh new cells produced by basal layer which is the lower layer of epidermis.

The Dermis lies below epidermis and consists of net work of collagen fibers which is responsible for elastic properties of skin. Sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles and sweat glands, are all present in dermis and get blood supply from the subcutaneous tissue present below dermis. Sebaceous glands get activated during puberty and produce oil like substance called sebum.

According to ayurveda acharya Sushruta, the skin has seven layers. These layers when get affected by imbalanced doshas (vital energetic forces of body) give rise to different skin diseases.
