Lipstick provides the final touch to your makeup. Without it no look is complete. For a perfect result, you will need a steady hand, some practice, the correct implements and a knowledge of the correcting techniques.
What all would you need for lipstick application?
A narrow, flat ended brush, a selection of finely sharpened lip pencils, lip gloss and lipstick (either the conventional tube lipstick or the cream type with a sponge-tip applicator). If your lip colour is uneven, then you will need a special lip base or balancer – use a lighter tone on the dark areas and a dark tone on light areas. These balancers also form a base for lipstick and help to keep the colour of the lipstick pure and clear.
How to apply Lipsticks and Lip Liners?
Step 1 - Before applying on lipstick clean lips with apiece of cotton wool swab dipped in cleansing milk. Lipstick does not give luster if your lips are not clean. Do not use soap because lips have soft skin.
Step 2 - Condition your lips with lip balm (avoid chap stick and other waxy substances) and let it fully absorb before applying colour on your lips.
Step 3 - Now you can choose to either apply the lip liner along the natural shape of your lips first, then fill in the rest of your lips with lipstick or applying the lipstick first, then topping it off with lip liner. If you have a problem with getting the lip liner to blend with the lipstick, apply the lipstick first.
Step 4 - Before outlining the lips, check that your lips are smooth and grease-free.
Step 5 - Use a sharp pencil of a shade close to that of your lipstick colour and with a steady hand, lightly outline the lips. For the upper lip, start at the centre and work out, towards the corner of the mouth. For the lower lip, work from side to side.
Step 6 - Fill in the lips with a special base or balancer to even out the skin tones. If your lips are of an even colour, use a face powder as a base.
Step 7 - Using a lipstick brush, fill in the colour. For the upper lip, start at the centre and work outwards. On the lower lip work from side to side. Don’t pile up too much colour. It is much easier to add more later than to remove any excess.
Step 8 - Fold a clean tissue and place it between your lips. Press the lips lightly together to remove the excess colour and to help seal the remainder, so that it stays on the lips rather than moving on to every glass you use.
Step 9 - Finally finish with a lip gloss to get a gleaming look.
Lipstick Applying Tips
Lipstick Applying Tip 1 - When lining your lips, start at one corner of your lower lip and work your way towards the centre.
Lipstick Applying Tip 2 - Use short, even strokes and never line directly onto your skin – always have the line touching the edge of your lips. Then line your top lip, concentrating on the small arches at the centre of your upper lip, making sure they’re defined but not too pointy and freaky-looking.
Lipstick Applying Tip 3 - Blot your lips by lightly clamping them down on tissue and releasing immediately.
Lipstick Applying Tip 4 - Another tip to keep you from ‘eating’ all your lipstick is alternately applying colour and blotting it. This will create layers of colour. But don’t apply more than three layers or your lips will look frighteningly thick.
SHAPING UP YOUR LIPS
Through a knowledge of what you can do to correct lip shape you can truly achieve a perfect finish to your face. Study the shape of your lips, identify the defects if any and decide on what you want to achieve and then proceed.
For Thin Lips: These are easily corrected by taking the pencil outside the natural lip line. Work slowly and steadily to form a perfect shape. Fill in with a primer and finally with the lipstick. A highlight of frosting on the upper lip would also create an impression of fullness.
For Thick Lips: These can be made to look smaller by drawing the outline just within the natural shape. Use medium toned lip colours and avoid dark browns, plums, electric brights or pale shimmer shades.
For Crooked Lips: Asymmetry in lips should be studied well and you will be able to correct the shape by adjusting the outline to provide a perfect balance.
For Shapeless Lips: Draw the most flattering shape by emphasizing the centre of the top line and adding fullness to the lower.
