Are you trying to improve your skin health to help achieve or maintain a youthful appearance? Your mother may have been right when she said “you are what you eat.” Next time you are thinking about purchasing pricey skin-firming creams and anti-aging lotions, remember that your overall diet and health regimen may contribute to smooth, supple skin.
Celebrity nutritionist Carrie Latt Wiatt helps A-list celebrities look their best, on and off the red carpet. Dubbed the "Diet Diva" by Vanity Fair magazine, Wiatt suggests the following foods for those looking to improve the appearance of their skin.
1. Avocado : This tasty fruit (yes, it’s a fruit!) is a skin all-star with its essential fatty acids, vitamin E content and anti-inflammatory B3 vitamins.
2. Fresh Grapefruit and 100% Grapefruit Juice : The vitamin C found in these Florida gems supports collagen production to help keep skin looking youthful and glowing. Collagen breakdown in the skin may contribute to the appearance of wrinkles.
3. Almonds : It’s easy to go nuts over almonds. Not only are they a delicious addition to oatmeal, stir fry and pasta dishes, the vitamin E content in each serving may help prevent premature aging and repair dry skin.
4. Whole Grains : Fill your lunch each day with a serving or two of whole grains, which contain zinc, a nutrient that may help combat acne.
5. Green Leafy Vegetables : Next time you make a salad, be sure to load it with dark green ingredients, like spinach and kale. They are rich in hyaluronic acid, a substance which helps the skin retain moisture.
6. Bonus : Water And don’t forget about your daily water intake. Keep a water bottle handy at work, on-the-go and during exercise to keep your body adequately hydrated. Wiatt recommends consuming at least 2 liters per day to keep skin looking fresh.
